New UAE Social Media Influencer License 2024: What You Must Know

The UAE and Abu Dhabi have recently introduced a new social media license for influencers, shaking up the digital landscape of social media in the country. If you're a content creator or influencer operating in Abu Dhabi and the UAE, it's crucial to understand these regulations. Let's dive into the key things you need to know about this new development.

1. What is this new license?

The new law from the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED) stipulates that social media influencers in Abu Dhabi require a license to do business, effective from July 1, 2024. Suppose you're earning money through sponsored posts, brand collaborations, or any form of social media marketing in the UAE, regardless of whether you are a tax resident. In that case, you'll need this license.

This regulation aims to professionalise the influencer industry and ensure transparency in digital marketing practices. It's part of a broader effort to regulate the rapidly growing influencer economy in the UAE.

2. Who needs the license?

An influencer license is required for individuals or groups that promote brands or products on social media platforms. ADDED has stated that non-compliance with regulations will bring penalties and fines, with the possibility of business closure. The fines can range from AED 3000 up to AED 10,000.

Licenses are mandatory for the following:

  • Individual influencers operating in Abu Dhabi
  • Groups or collectives of influencers working together under a registered company
  • Businesses that engage with influencers for promotional activities

To apply for the new license, fill in the form through the ADDED Tamm website. The costs for the license are AED 1250 for an individual or AED 5000 for influencer groups or companies.

Influencers participating in social media activities must also have a permit from the UAE National Media Council. Both permits guarantee compliance with national and local media guidelines.

3. Why is the new license required?

The new regulations allow for a safer and more transparent social media space online. Abu Dhabi decided to introduce the requirement to regulate digital advertising better and keep high standards for work in this industry.

The aim is to increase accountability and transparency for influencers and to ensure they are protected. Both influencers and businesses in the industry must operate within the new regulations, with security and compliance leading to more satisfactory outcomes. The rules have been met with a welcome, and seen as necessary by those in the industry.

This requirement comes with the UAE moving to implement stronger laws for social media, with many emirates following to implement stronger compliance for content creators and influencers.

Likewise, Dubai requires the National Media Council license in addition to a freelancer trade license. Other emirates such as Ajman and Ras al Khaimah also have a license requirement for influencers and companies.

While there are differences, there's a trend towards harmonisation of rules across the UAE. Influencers operating in different emirates should stay informed about the regulations in each location.

Conclusion

Abu Dhabi's new social media license for influencers marks a significant shift in the emirate's digital landscape. While introducing new responsibilities, it also presents opportunities for professional growth and credibility in the influencer industry.

You can navigate this new environment successfully by understanding the requirements, effectively managing your finances, and staying informed about the regulations.
